One of the most striking landmarks on Frederick, Maryland's Market Street is the Lester Bowie mural, impossible to miss as you head south through downtown. Designed and painted by artist Rafael Blanco, the mural honors jazz legend and Frederick native Lester Bowie, whose innovative career helped redefine modern jazz. Bowie was known for performing in a white lab coat, a symbol of his belief that he was a researcher of jazz and that the stage was his laboratory.
When I painted this watercolor, I wanted to capture more than just the mural itself. I was drawn to the contrast between the vibrant explosion of color surrounding Bowie and the historic brick buildings that frame the scene. As a watercolor artist, I enjoy finding ways to balance architectural detail with bold artistic expression, allowing the mural to become the focal point while preserving the character of downtown Frederick. It's a celebration of both the city's rich history and its thriving public art scene.
